How to Achieve A Modern Interior Design Aesthetic

How do I achieve a modern interior design aesthetic? This is a question I often hear in my work as a Melbourne interior designer, and the answer is simple in my opinion, you need to be authentic!

So, you want a modern interior design aesthetic, but you don’t know where to start?

The best place to start in your modern house interior design project is by looking at what you already have, from your wardrobe to your book collection and even the sheets on your bed! The things that you already have in your home are the key to achieving your own modern interior design aesthetic.

Once you have had a good look around your home it’s time to start to look for your own authentic modern interior design aesthetic. Now let’s look at your wardrobe, look for your favourite pieces: your favourite pair of very loved worn tan boots, your favourite supper soft cashmere sweater and the very special oversized green woollen coat. From these few pieces you can start to build and find your authentic style and from this you can achieve your own modern interior design aesthetic.

Now let’s look at those pieces from above in detail, what do they say about you?

The Tan Boots

These boots say a few things about you, Tan is a fantastic team player and unlike black it’s a softer tone and shows wear and tear, but that’s half the charm! So, what do these boots say? They say that you love pieces that work with everything, but also have a soft edge to them. They also show that you like your pieces to be loved and warn and that you don’t mind when something is used and not perfect.

Look at your tan boots and imagine a beautiful worn tan leather sofa, it gets better with age and shows a live well lived!

The Cashmere Sweater

A supple soft cashmere sweater says that you love the touch of your pieces, that soft bed sheets and cosy rugs underfoot will be key pieces in your modern interior design aesthetic.

The Oversized Green Coat

There is something so casual and comfortable about an oversized coat, but you also need to have a bit of confidence to wear a piece like this! This coat says that you like a casual feel, you enjoy a little bit of colour and that you are willing to take style risks!
